focus on good works...

Post by Amanda Chaffee (February 1, 2009)

There's always a special place for pets at 3Fold - sometimes our furry friends even join us during the work day! (Hi, Sunnie!)

Although our successful Thanksgiving pet food drive is complete, we're still keeping eyes and ears on our favorite pet-related causes. A couple months ago I had the pleasure of working with the wonderful folks at Happy Tails Pet Sanctuary to rescue a sweet stray that came into my care. Moving, a tight budget and an "only-child" cat at home prevented me from adopting him, much to my dismay. Though he was shy, I knew with some TLC and patience that the "Little Orange Kitty" would be a wonderful friend. I just had to find some way to help him! Thus, I delved into a Google search and found Happy Tails.

Happy Tails specializes in feline rescue but has been known to help out a few canine friends, too. They are a special no-kill rescue organization featuring a cage-free, open room atmosphere for cats awaiting new homes. When walking into their facility, one finds several happy and healthy kitties relaxing or playing on specially designed furniture from floor to ceiling. Adoptions are run through their website adoption listing, their street location and adoption days with Petsmart on Arden and Watt.

Currently located near the corner of H St. and 56th St, Happy Tails is organized and ready to help cats and potential owners alike. However, in pursuit of better serving their animals, they have just purchased a larger office space! It's an exciting move for the organization, but they are in great need of supplies to setup the new place. With funds tight for everyone, Happy Tails has teamed up with Zoe’s Cruises & Tours and McCrea Family Foundation to host the "Cruisin' for Cats" contest. A $50 donation to Happy Tails will buy one raffle ticket in a drawing for a Princess Cruises European cruise for two! Or, if you like, you can choose a cash prize of $6,000. Tickets are limited to 1,000 and the drawing will be held March 31, 2009. Learn more about "Cruisin' for Cats" by visiting the Happy Tails homepage.

We know fifty bucks can hard to come by, but Happy Tails is appreciative of any help, large or small. Check out their "How You Can Help" page to find a way to contribute that might work best for you!

some of our community contributions...

"I played baseball for the first 23 years of my life, and I always benefited tremendously from my coaches and mentors. They taught me a lot about the game, but also took time to invest in me as a person. The values and lessons I learned from them stick with me to this day. I wanted to be able to pass those along to kids who don't get the opportunities I did, so I found a little league in Oak Park where I could step in and be a positive male role model. The progress the kids make both on and off the field is incredible"

“I’ve traveled to China several times to teach English to both kids and adults. While I loved both experiences, I realized that there are people right in my own backyard who don’t know English. They can’t go grocery shopping, can’t help their children with homework, and would struggle in an emergency situation. So, I started volunteering with the Sacramento Literacy Center. Right now, I’m preparing Sajida to take the US Citizenship test. Just six months ago, she couldn’t write sentences. Now she is reading and writing!”
